Meet Vivi: More Die Hard than Twilight
I'm one of those people who is offended by Coco's comparison to Twilight, but I can see what she's saying. It's not like any of us reeeeeeeeally believe that these kdramas are anything but complete and utter gooey fluff--the s'mores of romcom-dom, one might say. The thing is, aside from the one Twilight movie that Coco forced me to watch, I couldn't ever bring myself to read any of the books or watch any of the movies in the series. Too sappy! Poor writing! Encourages unhealthy, co-dependent, emotionally abusive relationships for young women!
So how did someone who would much rather see things blow up than read about vampires in love end up on this blog?
...
I can't help myself. In spite of my sneering, I have a sentimental side that turns into a puddle of goop at certain kinds of romcoms, and that's what got me secretly addicted to kdramas (with a little initial encouragement from Coco, of course). But the problem is that the more kdramas I watched, the more I found myself wanting to gush over the swoony bits and laugh at the over-the-top ridiculous bits. I couldn't very well admit to non-kdrama watchers in my real life that I secretly consumed 11 episodes of Prosecutor Princess over the weekend ("Ignore the title! It's actually good!" is how the imaginary conversation in my head ends), so I'm sharing my love (and hate) of all things kdrama here. I hope we become best secret-kdrama-watching friends forever.

Love! Same reason I started my own blog! =)

I like your blog! I have only seen some of the Korean movies on Netflix (and the only one I really, really liked was Finding Mr. Destiny), so your reviews will help give me some ideas!
DeleteI'm with you, girl. Honestly, I've been over romcoms for a very long time, I couldn't get into Twilight and yeah, tend to sneer. But I am becoming a kdrama addict and I can't explain it. Maybe it's the different culture or that I really don't know much about the actors aside from their work (unlike everyone splashed all over mags and web here)? No clue. Maybe I'll give up trying to figure it out and just enjoy!
ReplyDeleteJust give in! I think part of it is that I haven't seen a really good romcom in a long time, so having more time to develop the plot was appealing. Ah, who am I trying to kid--I have no idea why I enjoy them so much!
DeleteI was never into romantic drama stories until one bored summer evening I stumble upon "My girlfriend is a gumiho" on Netflix...Kdrama changed all that! Next thing you know just like you I was addicted and the more kdramas I watched, the more I found myself enjoying those innocent love scenes, and laugh way too hard at the overly dramatic ones =D.
ReplyDeleteRight now I just started watching "Who are You" with Ok Taecyeon, only two episode aired and I feel so addicted already...it's a different kind of Kdrama though...Mystery, love, ghost are involved O_O
I don't usually blog about things I watch but I felt like I had to tell the world about this new show: http://dacrazyz.blogspot.com/2013/08/must-watch.html
I will gladly be your best secret-kdrama-watching friends forever, I keep your Kdrama secret, you keep mine ;)
Welcome to our secret drama watching club! I loved Taecyeon in Dream High, but I think I'm going to have to wait until the whole series airs before I watch Who Are You. I can't stand the suspense of waiting for new episodes!
Delete:-) Thanks for the welcome. I haven't actually watch Dream High yet, but I heard it's good. I understand why you'll wait, I usually wait till a serie is over before I start watching it too, I don't know what got over me this time "Michoso, michoso"
DeleteI am so very new to this scene, actually three months to the day! Boys Over Flowers came up as a suggested show for me on Hulu. It was a rainy day and my son was napping... so I clicked it and pow I was sucked in. My husband thinks I'm crazy, since I don't ever read or enjoy anything overly girly or romantic. But it seems I have a deeply hidden and secretive romantic side because I truly cannot get enough! I follow DramaFever on facebook and they've linked to a few things on your page thus I've stumbled here. It is lovely to know there are other secret lovers of K-drama!
ReplyDeleteHi Vivi! how old are you? are you from SoCal? -Mye
ReplyDeleteI'm 28, but not from SoCal!
Delete"I hope we become best secret-kdrama-watching friends forever" too! ^^ The blog looks great and I look forward to fangirl-ing and critiquing with you guys. Fighting!
ReplyDeleteOh, I want to be your best secret-kdrama friend. I enjoy your blog and look forward to updates.
ReplyDeleteI've been ashamed of being a kdrama addict. I'm so glad I found your blog. It's a great resource and now I can share! Someday (Bae Doo Na) was my first.
ReplyDeletegahh omg I need some secret-kdrama -watching friends too!! I'm a semi in the closet kdrama addict myself. My friends and family know I watch Korean dramas and they all think I'm a complete freak! I have no one to share my addiction with:( lol I've very recently started my own blog and even though I only have a few posts up but I'm really enjoying it! Check it out and let me know what you think? www.kdramakrazy.wordpress.com
ReplyDeletei'd like to watch k-dramas on my tv (via the roku player) are there places other than netflix that you can pay a subscription for but have access to more kdramas? thanks
ReplyDeleteYes, there are! Both Dramafever.com and Viki.com have subscription services or you can just watch with commercials), and both have extensive kdrama libraries. Between the two of them, you can find most recent kdramas.
ReplyDeleteThank God I'm not the only one. In the five weeks since I discovered them, K-dramas have secretly taken over my life like a crack addiction.
ReplyDeleteHi! I think you guys are really cool for setting up this blog ^_^ I'm actually doing a school project on kdrama at the moment. I'm looking into why 2nd generation Chinese enjoy watching Korean drama. Initially I wanted to look into other cultural groups (like people who arent asian like yourselves) but I found it easier to just stick with one group. Here's my survey below! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1LKoZGqdGgTulAGKfLWpQxF5rttZOO1HdwaEI1cPm9GE/viewform?c=0&w=1&usp=mail_form_link (it closes on 19th June)
ReplyDeleteAlthough i know you arent Chinese yourselves, I was really hoping if you could pass this along to any of your Chinese friends that would be really nice =)
over and out!
-Abby
YES! Let's do it! I'm always up for talking about dramas in real life.
ReplyDeleteWonderful! My whole office watches Asian dramas & listens to K-pop...so yeah...they want to come too. Shall I DM you on Twitter? Maybe I can just email you...did you know we lived in the same city? And I was just clueless?
ReplyDeleteSend me an email! I think I actually know two or three people who know you, but I wasn't sure if you lived here. This sounds like fun!
ReplyDeleteㅋㅋ small world. small world. I will send an email!
